S. Korean Q4 Short-Term External Debt Declines

South Korea's short-term external debt decreased by $3.6 billion at the end of 2011, while the ratio of short-term debt to total external debt fell by 3.5 percentage point to 44.4 percent from the end of 2010, the Bank of Korea said Tuesday.

Due to an increase in long-term debt, total external debt increased by $39 billion to $398.4 billion in the fourth quarter of 2011.

As of the end of 2011, the outstanding amount of Korea's external assets in debt instruments totaled at $496.4 billion, an increase of $45.4 billion from the end of 2010.

External assets exclude investments in equity capital, equity securities and financial derivatives from international investment position assets.
